The challenge of keeping a vigilant watch on compliance with our state
practice act has been passed on to our newly reorganized Ethics and Compliance
Committee. This time consuming and difficult duty helps to preserve the
sanctity of our professional credentials and to protect those things that
make us a healthcare profession.
The Ethics and Compliance Committee reminds all certified
athletic trainers, students and administrators that the
law is very specific on licensure and the ability to practice
as an athletic trainer. The Board of Medical Examiners,
who have authority over our profession, has recently restated
that anyone who is certified by the NATABOC, regardless
of their setting or level of practice, must first be licensed
to practice under the laws of the State of Tennessee.
Failure to comply with these requirements can endanger
not only state licensure but also NATABOC certification
both current and future. Improper supervision of students
can jeopardize the credentials of the supervisors and/or
curriculum coordinators/directors as well as certified
individuals that are employers.
This committee pursues all information it receives of
potential violations and cooperates fully with the State
Board of Medical Examiners and the NATABOC as appropriate.
Members are encouraged to take self-responsibility and
to educate themselves regarding our practice act as well
as our rules and regulations. This includes timely renewal
of the state license as well as updating personal information
with the state board.
